When you have a pregnant cat or dog, it’s always best to communicate with us when she is about to reach 50 days. Once she has her babies, the responsibility is yours. To help the new mom and her babies be more comfortable, you must make arrangements.

The new mom is going to be medicated at the beginning, and she needs your help to keep her babies warm and nurse every 2 hours. If the mother doesn’t produce milk, you must find a source of colostrum for the puppies to get within the first 24 hours. In today’s market, you can find milk specially formulated for dogs. Goat milk is OK, but not ideal. Cow milk is not OK.

Remember: As a clinic that receives animals every day with different diseases, we do not keep the mother and newborns any longer than it takes the female to wake up. We do not want the puppies staying in the hospital any longer than needed to decrease their exposure to disease.
